Ideas for a Retro Living Room

According to wikipedia, Retro is a culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion from the overall post-modern past, that has since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. The use of "retro" style iconography and imagery interjected into post-modern art, advertising, mass media, etc. It generally implies a vintage of at least fifteen or twenty years. For example, clothing from the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s could be termed retro.

Retro living rooms usually feature bright cheerful colours, making them funky,  colourful, warm and inviting spaces. To make for a well put together retro living room, it is important to know what features to integrate.  You can choose to add splashes of colour if on a tight budget, otherwise, go all out and transform your entire living room!

Furniture

To create a more retro feel in the living room choose furniture which represents the style. It will set the tone and mood to the whole interior. Abstract and retro futuristic shapes and designs such as poofs, and colourful fabrics in neon, orange and the likes  set the tone for a reto look.

Patterns

Patterned upholstery as oposed to plain helps infuse the much desired look. Wall paper is also a good tool, however alternatives such as patterned curtains or carpets will also do the trick. Abstract, geometric, or floral patterns will help create elaborate retro living room designs. Interesting pattern can make for a great feature wall that will definitely set the mood for a retro living room.

Details

Add retro details and accessories like movie posters (or a nice picture of Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, James Dean or any other iconic figure from the past), lamps, and beads as well as 'artifacts' like a record player or a retro radio to the living room design. Try to disguise the modern technology or frame it to fit into the retro style living room. For instance, a flat screen TV could be framed with a shabby chic wooden frame to make it blend in to the theme of the room.
